Field Favored in Derby Future Wager; Kafwain 9-1

With the field favored at 7-2 at the completion of the first day of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 2, Louisiana Derby (gr. II) runner-up Kafwain attracted the most individual action Thursday.

A total of $23,540 was wagered across the country. The bet remains open until Sunday, when the odds are locked in, so the numbers figure to fluctuate quite a bit until then. Most of the action figures to take place after prep races are run Saturday, including the Florida Derby (gr. I) and Swale Stakes (gr. III) at Gulfstream. The Tampa Bay Derby, Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct (both gr. III) and San Felipe Stakes (gr. II) at Santa Anita are on Sunday.

Peace Rules, who defeated Kafwain convincingly Saturday, remained a cool 12-1 proposition, bettors no doubt reacting to trainer Bobby Frankel's statement that the race took a lot out of the son of Jules and he may be aimed at the Preakness instead.

Atswhatimtalknbout, who will make his stakes debut in Sunday's San Felipe, was held at 10-1, second choice among individual horses. Badge of Silver, sixth in the Louisiana and scheduled for minor throat surgery, is 11-1, along with Florida Derby early line favorite Empire Maker. Lion Tamer (15-1), Domestic Dispute, Man Among Men and Ministers Wild Cat (all 16-1) and Fountain of Youth (gr. I) winner Trust N Luck (17-1) are also well-fancied. Impressive El Camino Real (gr. III) winner Ocean Terrace is at 50-1.
