A change in shoes helped Billie Courtney's Distinctive Code turn the tables on her distaff sprint rivals, cruising to victory in the $100,000 Victoria Lass Handicap on Saturday at Fair Grounds. Trained by Larry Robideaux Jr., Distinctive Code held off closing 4-5 favorite Miss Lodi to win by 1 1/4 lengths. Final time in the six-furlong Victoria Lass was 1:10.14 Coming off a third-place finish as the favorite in the Pan Zareta Handicap last month, Distinctive Code was dismissed by the public at odds of better than 13-1. "She just wasn't herself in the Pan Zareta," Robideaux said. "In the Pan Zareta I got a little smart and switched her shoes, not thinking, from turf shoes when I won an allowance race. I thought I would move this filly up putting Louisiana grabbers on and she just wasn't herself. This morning the blacksmith put plain ol' shoes on her." Ridden by Shane Sellers, Distinctive Code returned $28.40, $9.80, and $5.60. "I know this filly has a lot of talent," Robideaux said. "She can run grass and she is a good miler. I told Shane she would put you into the race and let this big filly run." Miss Lodi was a half-length ahead of Pan Zareta winner Fuse It in third. Distinctive Code, a 4-year-old filly by Lost Code out of the Distinctive Pro mare Distinct Manner, has now earned $182,460 after her sixth win from 16 starts.
