A celebration of legendary trainer Charlie Whittingham's 90th birthday will be presented at Santa Anita on Sunday. A Whittingham career display of memorabilia will be available for viewing all day on the mainline grandstand near the newsstand. Charlene Van Bluecher, daughter of the trainer, will oversee the presentation. Races will be named for several of Whittingham's major stakes winners. Following the seventh race, members of the Whittingham family, headed by his wife, Peggy, will be on hand in the winners' circle for a special ceremony, after which a video tribute will be shown.
Peggy Whittingham will present a trophy to the winning connections of the $150,000 Providencia Stakes. Sunday's feature race is named for one of the hundreds of stakes winners trained by Whittingham during a brilliant career that spanned 62 years. The Hall of Fame trainer died one week after his 86th birthday, on April 20, 1999. Whittingham is the leading trainer in career wins at Santa Anita with 869 and in stakes wins with 204.
