Claim Pays Off: No Jacket Required Takes Shakertown

No Jacket Required, claimed by trainer Tom Amoss for $40,000 in his last start, returned to the track Saturday to earn a neck-length win in the $113,700 Shakertown Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Keeneland. Under jockey Brice Blanc, the 6-year-old gelded son of Jolie's Halo completed the 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:03.25 on firm turf.

Ghostly Numbers led the field through the early going while pressed from the outside by Mighty Beau, who took over the lead on the turn. Abderian stalked the leaders from the outside on the turn, then the son of Machiavellian made what appeared to be a winning move in the stretch when jockey Edgar Prado guided him through an opening along the rail. No Jacket Required then emerged from a pack of closing horses on the outside to notch the victory.

"He asked me for a breather around the turn and I gave it to him because I knew this is a long stretch," said Blanc. "I was confident when we went through the hole because I had plenty of horse. He has a great turn of foot. Tom (Amoss) has done a great job with him."

No Jacket Required earned $70,494 for the win, his seventh in 47 career races. The Shakertown marks his third consecutive victory, following the claiming race win and a 1 1/4-length score in an allowance race for non-winners of one other than, both in turf sprints at Fair Grounds. No Jacket Required was bred in Kentucky by Richard Kaster and is owned by Temple W. Webber Jr.

No Jacket Required paid $26.80, $10.80 and $5.60 and topped a $164 exacta. Testify nipped Abderian at the wire to finish second and paid $5.40 and $3.40. Abderian was worth $3 to show.

Medal Play, Airbourne Command, Fiscally Speaking, Mighty Beau, Shades of Sunny, Bananas, and Ghostly Numbers completed the order of finish. (Chart, Equibase)
