Offlee Wild on Track for Derby Bid

With many of the partners of owner Azalea Stables on hand, Holy Bull Stakes winner Offlee Wild worked in company at Churchill Downs on Tuesday and accomplished what trainer T. V. Smith wanted from the workout.

According to Churchill clockers, the son of Wild Again was timed in 1:01 2/5 for the five-furlong work under jockey Robby Albarado. The quarter-mile fractional times were :12 2/5, :24 4/5, :37 3/5, and :49 as he galloped out three-quarters of a mile in 1:14 4/5.

Offlee Wild worked in company with stablemate Roman Centurion, who was ridden by Joe Deegan.

"The first part of the work went a little slower than I would have liked," Smith said of the work, in which Roman Centurion started in front of Offlee Wild to set up for the Derby contender to catch the stablemate. "I wanted the rabbit (Roman Centurion) to go a little faster. But he (Offlee Wild) picked it up down the stretch and he galloped out well, which he always does."

Ridden by four different jockeys, Offlee Wild has put together a record of two wins, one second, and one third in six lifetime starts, with earnings of $182,785. In his most recent outing, the colt was ridden by Pat Day to a third-place finish in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I).
