Alexine Returns in Hollywood's Hawthorne

(from track report)
Alexine, a gray mare who lost by a nose when favored in last year's Hawthorne Handicap (gr. III), will be the high weight and probable favorite in this year's $100,000-added running on Friday night at Hollywood Park.

The Hawthorne highlights the first Hollywood Park Friday evening race program of the 65-day Spring/Summer Meet.

The 7-year-old Argentine-bred, trained by Richard Mandella, will carry 117 pounds including jockey Corey Nakatani. Six fillies and mares are set to contest the 1 1/16-mile event that will go as the third race on a nine-race card at 7:05 p.m.

One year ago, Alexine closed boldly following a troubled start to barely miss overtaking Queen of Wilshire in the Hawthorne, a race that has been won by four champions. Riboletta was the most recent in 2000. Alexine enters this year's running with an 8-3-4 record in 22 career starts for earnings of $442,732.

Styler, a 4-year-old daughter of Holy Bull, will be making her stake debut following an 8 1/2-length victory in a maiden sprint race at Santa Anita for trainer John Shirreffs.

Immediately following the racing program, Hollywood Park will present a rock concert featuring Morris Day and The Time in the East Paddock Garden.
