Full Spectrum Wins Mamzelle Stakes

Edited release from Churchill Downs
The Phoebe Mueller Trust's Full Spectrum, ridden by Calvin Borel and trained by Tom Amoss, assumed command in the upper stretch and drew off to post a 2 3/4-length victory over Crystal Sea in the seventh running of the $113,500 Mamzelle Stakes at Churchill Downs on Thursday afternoon.

Making her first start in two months, Full Spectrum stalked early leaders Leslie's Love and Senorita Ziggy, who threw a first quarter-mile in 21.94 seconds and a half in 44.44. Borel moved to the front with the 4-year-old daughter of Broad Brush inside the quarter pole and went on to tally and reward her backers mutuels of $16, $7.80 and $5.60.

Crystal Sea, ridden by Kent Desormeaux, returned $7.20 and $5.20, while Senorita Ziggy, who was another half-length back in third under Cornelio Velasquez, returned $11.60 to show. Even-money favorite Repository finished fifth in the field of 10.

The victory was the fourth in 20 career starts and the first stakes win for Full Spectrum, who was bred in Ontario by Sam-Son Farm. She earned $70,370 to increase her career winnings to $151,303.

"She'd been running in tough sprint races down south (Fair Grounds in New Orleans)," said winning trainer Tom Amoss. "She was running dynamite down there. She earned her spot in this race (her first stakes attempt) and I knew she'd run big today. I was concerned about the 10 post. That far out can be a problem. But Calvin (rider Calvin Borel) did a great job of getting her out of there and getting her in the right spot. When they turned for home and I saw where she was, I said 'No excuses from here.' "
