Pimlico will kick off a stretch of four added-money events on Friday with the 8 1/2-furlong Pimlico Breeders' Cup Distaff Handicap (gr. III). The race is the eighth on the day's 12-race card. The field is seven strong and includes grade I winner Summer Colony, who has not started since last year's Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I), and Smok'n Frolic, who is currently ninth in earnings among all North American-based horses in training.
Even though she hasn't run in more than six months, Summer Colony is the highweight in the handicap at 121 pounds. John Velazquez has the mount on the Edward Evans homebred.
Summer Colony and Stormy Frolic, another entrant in the race, are both by Summer Squall. Stormy Frolic and Smok'n Frolic were both bred in Florida by Cherokee Farms and descend from the mare Cherokee Frolic. Smok'n Frolic follows Summer Colony in the weight assignments with 120 pounds. She comes to the race off a second-place finish in the April 19 Bed o' Roses Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. III). In March she won the Next Move Handicap (gr. III). This year alone the 4-year-old filly, who is trained by Todd Pletcher for Dogwood Stable, has earnings of $547,520.
