IIIT) on Saturday, trainer John Shirreffs confirmed."It might have been a little fast, but she's been training real well," said Shirreffs of the decision to supplement after the blowout under exercise rider Gerard Gaidosch.Makeup Artist, owned by George Krikorian, was a fast-closing second in the Providencia Stakes in her last start on the Santa Anita turf April 13. The supplementary fee is $5,000 for the one-mile grass test for 3-year-old fillies.Victor Espinoza, who won the Preakness Stakes on the corresponding Saturday last year with War Emblem, has the call. A field of at least six is probable. Joining Makeup Artist will be Major Idea (Corey Nakatani), Rutters Renegade (Alex Solis), Little Malvern (Mike Smith), Shapes and Shadows (Jose Valdivia, Jr.) and Bartok's Beau (Iggy Puglisi).Rutters Renegade also blew out three furlongs, in :36.80, under exercise rider Randy Valdez for the Richard Mandella stable. The Irish-bred filly will make her United States debut after recording three firsts and four seconds in eight starts in England last year.Little Malvern also will make her U.S. bow for the Jim Cassidy stable. The English-bred filly posted two firsts and two seconds in eight starts last year in England.
The Senorita is the first of three stakes on grass for 3-year-old fillies during the meet, climaxed by the $750,000 American Oaks July 5. The $200,000 Honeymoon Breeders' Cup Handicap is June 7.
