Century City will be supplemented for $10,000 to the $350,000-added Shoemaker Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT) May 26, according to trainer Beau Greely. Century City worked a sharp three furlongs on turf in :34.80 Thursday under Victor Espinoza."It was a really nice work," said Greely of the Irish-bred 4-year-old colt. Century City sandwiched a victory in the Arcadia Handicap (gr. IIT) between lackluster performances in trips to Louisiana and Kentucky, the most recent a sixth-place finish in the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic (gr. IT) at Churchill Downs May 3.
"It was a sand-based course in Kentucky, just like Louisiana, and some horses don't like it," said Greely. "He seems to like firm ground. He bobbled when he worked in Kentucky. Today he pulled Victor along there nice."Other probable starters for the Shoemaker include defending champion Ladies Din (Patrick Valenzuela), Redattore (Alex Solis), Special Ring (Jose Valdivia, Jr.), War Zone (David Flores) and Touch of the Blues (Kent Desormeaux). Touch of the Blues, runner-up in the 2001 Shoemaker, worked seven furlongs in 1:29.40 on grass for trainer Neil Drysdale.
