George Krikorian's even-money favorite Makeup Artist rallied widely on the final turn in posting a 1 1/2-length victory in Saturday's $113,500 Senorita Stakes (gr. IIIT) for 3-year-old fillies on the Hollywood Park turf.
Ridden by Victor Espinoza, Makeup Artist finished a length and a half in front of fast-closing Rutters Renegade in a time of 1:36 2/5 for the one-mile event. Shapes and Shadows, who had gotten the lead in the stretch, was third in the field of seven, a half-length farther back. Major Idea, the 5-2 second choice, was fourth.
Makeup Artist and Irish bred Rutters Renegade, ridden by Alex Solis, brought up the rear as longshot Bartok's Beau carved out fractions of :24 3/5, :49 and 1:13 1.5 while chased by Shapes and Shadows. On the final turn, Espinoza veered Makeup Artist to the outside. Three-wide as he hit the stretch, Makeup Artist got to Shapes and Shadows, ridden by Jose Valdivia Jr., inside of the eighth pole and continued on gamely to defeat Rutters Renegade.
The victory, Makeup Artist's first in a stakes race, was worth $68,100. She lost by a neck to Star Vega in the Providencia at Santa Anita on April 13, her first race in stakes company. With two wins and two seconds in four career starts for trainer John Shirreffs, the Kentucky-bred daughter of Dynaformer doubled her career bankroll to $136,300.
Makeup Artist paid $4, $2.60 and $2.20. Rutters Renegade returned $4 and $3. The show payoff for Shapes and Shadows was $3. The $2 exacta was worth $20.
