No Surprise as Favored Cuvee Rolls in Kentucky Breeders' Cup

Edited track release
Cuvee, ridden by Lonnie Meche, swept to the lead on the far turn and drew off for a convincing 8 1/4-length victory over First Money in Memorial Day's featured $174,200 grade III Kentucky Breeders' Cup for 2-year-olds at Churchill Downs.

The son of Carson City, who gave trainer Steve Asmussen his second straight win in this race, covered 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:04.45 and paid $3.20, $2.40 and $2.20. First Money, with Robby Albarado aboard, pressed the early pace before giving way to the winner, paid $3.40 and $2.60. Exploit Lad, with Jason Lumpkins aboard, finished six lengths back in third and paid $3.40.

Owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds, LLC, Cuvee earned $109,554 to propel his lifetime bankroll to $134,429. The colt is now 2-for-2 with both wins coming at Churchill Downs.

Exploit Lad and First Money battled for the early lead through fractions of :22.46 for the quarter-mile as Cuvee laid just behind the leaders. Cuvee took the lead on the far turn and began to draw off under a hand ride down the lane as First Money clearly held second place.

"He's a very nice horse and he's extremely talented," said assistant trainer Scott Blasi. "He warrants us mapping out a schedule that fits according to his ability. We're not going to get too aggressive now. The Bashford Manor (July 6) seems like the next step if he comes back well."
