ESPN has extended its pre-race coverage 30 minutes, and will air its Belmont show from 3-5:30 p.m. ET. In addition it will begin its Belmont post-race program at 7:00, 30 minutes later than usual.
Because of complications with its schedule, NBC initiated a time change for the June 7 Belmont Stakes (gr. I) in which Funny Cide will attempt to win the Triple Crown. Post time for the event will now be 6:38 p.m. EDT, a half-hour later than usual. The 90-minute NBC show will now air from 5:30-7 p.m. ET."It was the only way to accommodate the day's programming," NBC spokesman Kevin Sullivan said. The network is slated to air the French Open women's finals earlier that day, followed by the Senior PGA Golf Championship and an arena football conference championship game. The schedule would have proven too tight to fit the Belmont program in beginning at 5 p.m. NBC believes that, if anything, the later start time should help viewership numbers for the race.
