Trebizond Holds on in Meadow Brook Chase

Tiring Trebizond stumbled after clearing the last two fences, but held on to beat Blasphemous by 3 1/2 lengths in the $106,150 Meadow Brook Steeplechase (NSA-I) for older horses at Belmont Park Thursday.

The Irish-bred Trebizond, carrying 154 pounds and Tom Foley for trainer Kathy Nielson, covered 2 1/2 miles on the soft turf in 4:57 2/5 to earn $63,690 for William Lickle. It was Trebizond's second win in four starts this year.

"I'm very happy," said Foley. "He's a horse you kind of have to keep after, so I kept him wedged in near the back of the pack. It's pretty soft in certain spots, but he doesn't mind that. It's a little soft at the top of stretch, but I know he handles it so well. That's when I asked him to run."

Nielson noted, "I knew that of the horses running today, he was going to benefit from the softer ground. I told Tom not to use him up too soon. I think he had a real smooth trip. Tom gave him a great ride, He'll always jump a little bit awkwardly here and again, but Tom still gets run out of him and it doesn't seem to slow him down.

Trebizond paid $9.60, $5.70 and $4.10. Blasphemous returned $36.20 and $15.80, and Mr Perkolater paid $5.40 to show.
