Shake You Down Splashes to True North Win

Shake You Down continued to show an affinity for an off track, running fast fractions over a sloppy surface at Belmont Park to win the $190,000 True North Breeders' Cup (gr. II). It was the fourth straight win for Shake You Down since being claimed by trainer Scott Lake, the last two graded stakes victories.

A 5-year-old gelding by Montrbook, Shake You Down dueled with Gioavannetti early, and then eased to the lead under Mike Luzzi as the field turned for home in the seven-furlong race.

Shake You Down was haltered for owner Robert Cole Jr. for $65,000 at Aqueduct on March 12. He then won two allowance races -- both on sloppy tracks -- before taking the Bold Ruler Handicap (gr. III) on May 10.

The fractions were brisk: :21.52, :44.05, :56.23 and the final time was 1:09.59.

"The fractions were fast and he kept going," Lake said. "He just wouldn't quit."

Luzzi agreed.

"I had a lot of confidence turning for home," he said. "He got to looking around a bit coming down the stretch, but he held on for the win."

The victory, worth $90,000, was Shake You Down's 11th in 30 career starts and boosted his career bankroll to $403,760.

Favored Shake You Down paid $3.70, $2.60 and $2.20. Pioneer Boy, who was coupled with Highway Prospector, returned $2.90 and $2.20. Vodka, another 4 ½ lengths back, paid $2.60 to show.
