Two-year-old bay colt Head of the House won a maiden special weight race for 2-year-olds at Hollywood Park Wednesday to become the first winner for the stallion Free House, who stands in California at Vessels Stallion Farm.
Head of the House races for owner John A. Toffan, who campaigned Free House in partnership with Trudy McCaffery, and is trained by Paco Gonzalez.
Making his first start since finishing third in his debut at Hollywood on June 4, Head of the House was the 2-1 favorite in the field of eight juveniles.
Ridden by Corey Nakatani, Head of the Hose rated in second behind the front running Leveee Town while three wide, moved between horses to vie for the lead and won a game battle down the stretch with Levee Town by three-quarters of a length. The final time for the 5 1/2-furlong test was 1:04 2/5 on a fast track.
Ron Stolich and Eddie Tannenbaum bred Head of the House, who is out of the Al Nasr mare Stardust Dreams, .
The winner paid $6.40, $3.40 and $2.80.
Free House, who entered stud in 2000, won nine times, including eight stakes, in 22 starts while earning $3,178,971. He won the
Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) at 3 and the Pacific Classic (gr. I) at 4. He was second in the 1997 Preakness and third in both the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes.
