"He showed me from the beginning in the mornings that he was a good horse," Azpurua said. "Today he got tested and came through."Sir Oscar is eligible for the Florida Stallion Stakes, a rich three-race series at Calder which begins on August 9.(Chart, Equibase)
Trainer Manuel Azpurua sent out his fifth Criterium Stakes winner in Oscar Novo's homebred colt Sir Oscar Saturday at Calder. The 2-year-old colt now sports a perfect two-for-two record, following his smashing 8 ¾ lengths maiden debut here on May 26. Sir Oscar, the 3-to-5 favorite in the $100,000 Criterium, defeated Charming Jim by a neck and completed the 5½ furlongs in 1:05 2/5 in what amounted to be basically a two-horse race. It was eight lengths back to My Friend Bruce in third."He wasn't nervous in the gate – I didn't realize he was that fast from the gate," said winning jockey Julio Garcia. "He's a good horse. At the quarter pole my horse started to stop on the outside, but then he went again."
