Dimitrova May Return for Matriarch, Weld Says

(from Hollywood Park notes)
Dimitrova, winner of the second running of the $750,000 American Oaks Saturday, is scheduled to be flown back to Ireland this week but could return this autumn for the Matriarch (gr. IT), trainer Dermot Weld said. Weld won the Matriarch last year with Dress To Thrill.

"She came back great," said groom Joey Mulholland Sunday. "She's a good filly and proved it by handling this new kind of turf."

Runner-up Sand Springs was scheduled to return to Churchill Downs this week for trainer Tony Reinstedler, who said she would run next at Saratoga.

Also returning east are seventh-place finisher Achnasheen (to Churchill), tenth-place finisher Fortuitous (Saratoga) and 13th-place finisher Gal O Gal (Laurel).

Also heading to Saratoga will be German import Meridiana, who finished a disappointing eighth after coming into season the morning of the race. Owner Klaus Hofmann is transferring the Italian Oaks winner to Patrick Biancone in New York. Italian import Golden Nepi, who finished sixth, was vanned to UC Davis to complete her isolation period for another two weeks before joining the Laura de Seroux stable on a permanent basis.

Trainer Ron McAnally said that French import Welcome Millenium, who finished 12th, lost a shoe during the race.
