Colonial Downs concluded its seventh annual Thoroughbred meet with a wet and wild closing day card which saw the final two races of the meet canceled by a torrential thunderstorm and pyrotechnic lightning display.Trainer Hamilton Smith wrapped up his training title in style and an absent Ryan Fogelsonger clinched the riding title. An early afternoon thunderstorm soaked the New Kent area and left the track a sea of slop by 4 p.m., an hour before post time. The sun came out and dried the track under perfect weather for the next few hours.
With the training title all sewn up, Smith was scheduled to receive his trophy and accolades after the fifth race. For good measure, he saddled Odd Number to a thrilling upset victory in that race, bringing his total to 17 wins for the meet.Just two races later, the skies opened up again with force, causing a lengthy weather delay between the seventh and eighth races. When the storm show no signs of abating, the remainder of the card was called off.All-time leading jockey Mario Pino was unable to mount a late rally on the final two days, finishing with 38 wins, four behind Fogelsonger.
