Outta Here Works; West Virginia Derby Next

Stakes winner Outta Here, who dead-heated for third in the July 13 Swaps Stakes (gr. II) at Hollywood Park, worked five furlongs in :58 2/5 under jockey Kent Desormeaux on Tuesday at Del Mar and was confirmed as heading to Mountaineer Park for the $600,000 West Virginia Derby (gr. III) by trainer Bill Currin, who is also the colt's co-owner.

"(The work) went just like it did in my dream last night," Currin said. "When Kent jumped off, he was as excited as a little boy with a brand new red bike."

Outta Here's work, which was the third-fastest of the 46 who went the distance on the day, was his final major prep for the West Virginia Derby and he'll now just gallop up to the nine-furlong event.

"He's fit enough so now I just have to keep him happy, which shouldn't be too hard," Currin said.

Outta Here will leave Del Mar next week and will be flown to Churchill Downs before catching a van for a 10-hour ride to Mountaineer Park. While not ideal travel arrangements, Currin notes the son of Dehere is a particularly good shipper.

"He's shipped all over," Currin said. "He went to Louisiana and Dubai and Kentucky without any trouble. I'm not looking forward to the 10-hour van ride for him and am still searching for other ways to get him there, but if he has to ride the van at least I know he'll travel well."

Outta Here, whose greatest career victory so far came in last year's $500,000 Delta Jackpot Stakes, has earned $546,572 from a record of 11-2-2-3.
