A.P. Smithwick is a Family Affair

It might be handy to have a breeding chart with you while studying Thursday's eighth running of the $75,000 A.P. Smithwick Memorial Steeplechase (NSA-II) at 2 1/16-miles over National Fences at Saratoga Race Course. And that's just for the trainers.

Trainer Sanna Hendriks is entered with 2001 A. P. Smithwick winner Praise the Prince, a New Zealand-bred who runs for George Strawbridge's Augustin Stable. Strawbridge is her stepfather. Also entered is trainer Ricky Hendriks, Sanna's husband, with Contrarian Stable's Tres Touche. And bringing a two-race winning streak to the Smithwick with Mrs. S.K. Johnston Jr.'s Mulahen is trainer Katherine Neilson, Sanna's sister, who previously worked for Hall of Fame trainer Jonathan Sheppard, who is entered with Invest West - who he trains for Augustin Stable. Katherine also has entered William C. Lickle's Trebizond, while Sheppard's other entry is Hudson River Farm's Allgrit.

Keeping his distance from the family reunion here is trainer Tommy Voss, who will saddle Fox Ridge Farm's Ferguson winner Anofferyoucantrefuse in hopes of winning his second Smithwick.
