$1.1-Million for Storm Cat Filly at Saratoga

It didn't take long for the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling sale to hit with a seven-figure yearling. Despite a steady rain outside, the bidding began with spirit in the Humphrey S. Finney pavilion, with a $1.1 million bid for Hip No. 13, a daughter of Storm Cat, out of champion older filly Jewel Princess.

Consigned by Lane's End, agent, the buyer was Eugene Melnyk. It was at this sale two years ago that Melnyk bought Strong Hope for seven figures. The Grand Slam colt won the Jim Dandy Stakes (gr. II) over Empire Maker on Sunday afternoon at Saratoga Race Course.

Two colts sold for high figures early on...and it was a family affair. Hip No. 18, a son of A.P. Indy consigned by Eaton Sales, agent, sold for $650,000. Out of Lady Lochinvar, a full sister to graded stake winner La Gueriere, was purchased by Buzz Chace, agent for Aaron and Marie Jones.

Moments later, a son of Unbridled's Song, out of La Gueriere, sold for $750,000. Consigned by Dromoland/Hartwell, the colt was purchased by the partnership group B.T.A.
