Local Favorite Champali Headlines Ky. Cup Sprint

Lloyd Madison Farm's Champali, winner of three straight stakes at Turfway Park earlier this year, returns as the morning-line favorite for Saturday's Kentucky Cup Sprint (gr. III). He'll face 11 rivals in the six-furlong race for 3-year-olds. The last of five stakes on the card, the Sprint has a post time of 6:33 p.m. EST.

Champali, trained by Greg Foley, won the Turfway Park Prevue, WEBN, and John Battaglia Memorial Stakes to kick off his 3-year-old campaign earlier this year at Turfway Park. He then ran third behind New York Hero and Eugene's Third Son in the 1 1/8-mile Lane's End Stakes on March 22. This summer the son of Glitterman won the $100,000 Northern Dancer Stakes at Churchill Downs. His last start, on July 5 at Prairie Meadows, resulted in a tiring fourth-place finish in the 1 1/16-mile Iowa Derby.

Pat Day, who has won the last two Sprints with Snow Ridge and Day Trader, will be aboard. Champali worked four furlongs in :47 flat at Churchill Downs on Wednesday morning.

Azalea Stables' Offlee Wild is also entered in the Sprint and is listed at 4-1 on the morning line. Not seen since finishing 12th in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) the dark bay son of Wild Again as been training steadily for conditioner T.V. Smith. His last move was a bullet :46 4/5 half-mile at Churchill Downs on Sept. 6. The winner of the Holy Bull Stakes (gr. III) at Gulfstream Park in January broke his maiden going six furlongs last year in late October at Churchill.

Lee Battaglia and James DiVito's Coach Jimi Lee is also 4-1 on the morning line. The son of Roar has won three stakes at six furlongs in Illinois this year.
