Lucky Story Game Winner of Champagne Stakes

Abdullah Buhaleeba's Lucky Story solidified his status as the early favorite for next year's Two Thousand Guineas (Eng-I) when he gamely held off Auditorium to win Friday's Champagne Stakes (Eng-II) at England's Doncaster Racecourse.

Trained by Mark Johnston, the 2-year-old Kris S. colt took the early lead and dug in gamely when challenged near the finish by runner-up Auditorium, who finished a neck behind the winner. Haafhd, the 10-11 favorite in the six-horse field, was third.

A full-brother to St. James's Palace Stakes (Eng-I) winner Dr. Fong, Lucky Story was bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm. Consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency to the 2002 Keeneland September Sale, the colt produced from the Miswaki mare Spring Flight was purchased by Gainsborough Stud for $95,000.

The colt has won four of five starts, including a previous victory over The Mighty Tiger in the Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes at Goodwood.
