Empire Maker has not run since finishing second to Strong Hope in the Jim Dandy Stakes (gr. I) on Aug. 3. He had been pointing for the Travers (gr. I) when he came down with a cough that has been going through the Frankel barn for the past several weeks. He did return to the track with a pair of sharp 5-furlong works.
Although trainer Bobby Frankel has not ruled out the Jockey Club Gold Cup (gr. I) for Juddmonte Farms' Empire Maker, he said he's thinking seriously of running the colt in the Goodwood Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. II) or the Meadowlands Cup (gr. II)."I don't know if I'm going to make the Gold Cup with him," Frankel said Saturday. Frankel had toyed with the idea of training the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner up to the Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I), but is now looking strongly at the Goodwood and Meadowlands Cup."It all depends on the weather and if I can get two breezes in him," Frankel said. "I've only missed three days with him, which is no big deal for him. He did cough a couple of times this morning, but he is improving. I might run him in the Meadowlands Cup, but it's all about the weather. I could just get him out of (New York) and train him in California for the Goodwood."
