Azeri Sent to Clinic Following Lady's Secret Loss

Following her loss to Got Koko in the Sept. 28 Lady's Secret Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. II) at Oak Tree at Santa Anita, trainer Laura de Seroux sent Horse of the Year Azeri to the San Luis Rey Downs Clinic to undergo a thorough check-up.

"She bled pretty heavily in the race and we've sent her to the clinic to have her lungs scanned," de Seroux said Tuesday from her San Luis Rey base. Azeri was treated with Salix (formerly Lasix) in the Lady's Secret. "I don't feel she is a true bleeder and this was an isolated incident. She's going to have a tracheal wash to try and isolate whatever bug it is that's in her system. But from what I know now, I am very encouraged."

Despite ending her win streak at 11 consecutive races, de Seroux called Azeri's performance in the Lady's Secret incredible. "In my mind she ran an incredible race," the trainer said. "Despite bleeding significantly, spotting her rivals a lot of weight and missing the start, she ran as hard as she could. It was just an incredible performance."

As far as plans for the Oct. 25 Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships are concerned, de Seroux said no plans would be made until the test results are complete.
