Graded Winner Freespool to Special T in California

Popular California speedster Freespool has been retired from racing and will enter stud at Rick Taylor's Special T Thoroughbreds near Temecula, Calif., for a fee of $3,000 as the property of Scott Guenther's Desperado Stables. Campaigned by the outfit, the 7-year-old son of Geiger Counter out of the Olden Times mare Broadtail won nine of 25 starts and earned $527,288 for trainer Ted H. West. Three of his wins at six furlongs came in 1:08 and change.

Bred by Ramon Rangel, Randy Swanson, and Janet Hewitt, Freespool won the El Conejo Handicap at Santa Anita twice in 2000. He began the season with a victory in the El Conejo Handicap in January and ended it with a triumph in the El Conejo in December whien it was a grade III event. The following year, he won the Phoenix Gold Cup, Oakland, and Pirate's Bounty Handicaps.

Freespool also placed in three graded stakes during his career, including consecutive runnings of the Palos Verdes Handicap (gr. II), once to champion sprinter Kona Gold.

Freespool last raced in 2002, finishing second in the Bing Crosby Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. II) in his final start. He was placed in training this year, but never started.
