Ocean Silk May Set Sail in Dowager

The Dowager will be run for the 12th time on Sunday at Keeneland but this is the first time the 1 1/2-miles turf race for fillies and mares will be called the Rood & Riddle Dowager, sponsored by Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital.

Ten fillies and mares were entered for the $150,000 Rood & Riddle Dowager with Robert Sangster's Ocean Silk worthy of marquee billing. The 3-year-old daughter of Dynaformer has had a successful season in Europe, winning a stakes at Goodwood and placing in others at Ascot, York, and Longchamp. Patrick Byrne, who can have one ready to fire fresh, will saddle the filly and Pat Day, Keeneland's all-time leading rider, will don the Sangster's famous blue and green silks.

Pin Oak Stable's Alternate always gives her best. The daughter of Seattle Slew captured the R.G. Dick Memorial Breeders' Cup Handicap at Delaware Park during the summer. Subsequently, she was narrowly beaten in the Glens Falls Handicap (gr. IITI) at Saratoga. She has good tactical speed and should be prominent throughout the race. Graham Motion, who saddled his first grade I winner last weekend with Film Maker in Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup (gr. IT) at Keeneland, trains the Kentucky homebred and has named Oliver Castillo to ride.

Golden Rhythm ships in from Louisiana to contest the Rood and Riddle Dowager. She won the Margar Breeders' Cup Handicap at Retama Park and the Sangue Handicap at Louisiana Downs this season for her owners, Sandstone Racing Partnership. She has won nine races in 29 starts on the grass. Robby Albarado takes the mount for trainer Paul H. Murphy.
