Secretariat Blanket Brings $21,600 Through Auction

The blanket worn by Secretariat after his victorious career finale in the 1973 Canadian International Championship sold for $21,600 after being offered online through E-bay and, the official Web site for the champion racehorse.

Donated for auction by Secretariat's owner, Penny Chenery, the funds from the blanket's sale will help benefit the Secretariat Foundation, Chenery's newly established non-profit, philanthropic organization that assists various equine-related efforts in the research, retirement, and rehabilitation fields.

The winning bid was placed by a Thoroughbred owner and breeder from British Columbia, Canada, who expressed feelings of both sentiment and honor to bring such an important racing artifact back home to Canada.

"I am touched to witness the continued popularity and appeal of Secretariat," Chenery said. "The interest in this blanket and the value placed on it demonstrates the positive impact Secretariat still has on the Thoroughbred community, even 30 years after his successful racing campaign."
