Colonial Gets OK for OTB Parlor Near Roanoke

Colonial Downs in Virginia is looking at four sites for an off-track betting parlor in Vinton, where voters on Nov. 4 approved a referendum by only 20 votes, the Roanoke Times reported.

Jerry Monahan, senior vice president for Colonial Downs, said a decision would be made "very shortly," the southwest Virginia newspaper reported Nov. 6. Vinton is a suburb of Roanoke, a city with a population of about 95,000.

The Vinton Town Council on Nov. 4 voted to include OTB parlors within the parameters of "general business district" zoning, the newspaper said.

Ron Adkins, chairman of Roanoke County's election board, said state law allows for a recount of any election decided by fewer than 50 votes if 50 citizens sign a petition that would have to be presented within 10 days of the vote's certification, which occurred Nov. 5, the Times reported.

Colonial Downs, located east of Richmond, has been trying to expand its OTB network around the state. It currently has parlors in Alberta, Chesapeake, Hampton, and Richmond.
