No Sure Things in Woodbine Slots Cup

The $166,650 Woodbine Slots Cup (Can-III), which serves up a perfect mix of frontrunners and closers, millionaires and up-and-comers, won't be an easy test for any of the nine contenders Saturday, including the razor-sharp Barbeau Ruckus.

Barbeau Ruckus could be on-track for his fifth win in seven starts this season in the 1 1/16-mile event.

The son of Barbeau, who has $634,217 in career earnings, faces several stout rivals, including millionaires Mobil, Wake At Noon and Kiss A Native. Parose, last year's 'Slots' champion, is on the cusp of reaching the prestigious seven-figure mark and Free of Love, a U.S. invader, boasts top figures.

Does Barbeau Ruckus have the goods to deliver a win on Saturday? According to the man at the controls, the answer comes in the form of the 4-year-old gelding's current form.

"He's a big, strong horse, who runs with his head high," said jockey Constant Montpellier, who has won three consecutive races when he's been aboard the Ontario-bred, all of the added-money variety. "He's in great form right now and he hopefully, he can come up with another big effort."

The Ross Armata-trainee heads into the Woodbine Slots Cup off a second-place effort to Parose in the Durham Cup Stakes on Oct. 4 at the Toronto oval. Barbeau Ruckus is in search of his ninth career score in this, his 23rd lifetime start.

Montpellier, who has three stakes triumphs on the campaign, will have an opportunity to assess the make-up of the two-turn event from a welcome vantagepoint, the outside post nine. He is 10-1 on the morning line.
