No Comprende Knows Woodbine Slots Score

(from Woodbine report)
No Comprende understood exactly what was asked of him on this day.

Starting in his 28th career race, the well-traveled 5-year-old captured Saturday's $166,650 Woodbine Slots Cup (Can-III) in gutsy fashion, staving off a spirited bid from multiple stakes winner Mobil and a late charge from Parose.

For No Comprende, it was career win number seven and his second from 10 starts in 2003. Jockey Patrick Husbands recorded stakes score number 16, two better than the 14 added-money events he won in 2000.

Owned by Clarity Stables and trained by James Smith, No Comprende, who has competed at various venues across North America, boosted his career earnings to $580,667 with the victory.

The son of Compadre, known for his rallying ways, gave Husbands a handful early, but the man at the controls kept his charge sixth in the early going. Settling outside of rivals, as Wake At Noon and Mobil battled on the lead through fractions of :23.61, :47.31 and 1:11.35, the Virginia-bred was asked to engage the leaders around the far-turn.

"Any time I've been on this horse, he's always dragging me. I just had to tell him, 'Not yet, not yet,'" offered Husbands, who has teamed up successfully with the dark bay in the past.

Under Husbands urging, No Comprende took a half-length lead in mid-stretch, and held off a brave rival in Mobil, who fought tooth-and-nail along the rail.

"When I asked him to go, he gave me the gear," said Husbands, who won his third consecutive race of the afternoon courtesy of No Comprende. "I thought my horse would pull away, but Mobil, he dug back in."

Husbands dropped his whip in the late stages of the 1 1/16-mile event, but No Comprende won by 1 ΒΌ lengths in a final time of 1:43.93 over a track rated fast.

"He ran a very good race," said Husbands. "It was a pleasure being back on him. Today, he showed me he wanted to be the man. I dropped my stick, but I got lucky."

Moments before the race, the field was reduced to seven starters, as Florida Recount was scratched by the commission veterinarian. Attest was an earlier scratch.

In victory, No Comprende returned $10.20, $4.50 and $2.60, combining with Mobil ($4.90, $3.20) for a $71.90 exacta. Parose ($2.70) completed the $141.60 trifecta.
