Baze, 45, is the only jockey in Thoroughbred racing history to win 400 races in a year more than three times. He ranks fourth in all-time with 8,474 victories.
Jockey Russell Baze won his 400th race of the year at Golden Gate Fields Wednesday, the 11th time in the past 12 years he has reached that milestone. The Hall of Fame jockey posted win No. 400 aboard Hooked On Niners in the third race. The William Morey Jr.-trained filly won by three lengths in a 1 1/16-mile turf event.Incredibly, Baze has failed to reach 400 victories only once since 1992. That was in 1999, when he finished with 373 wins after being sidelined for more than a month with a back injury. He led the nation in wins seven times during that span, establishing a personal high of 448 wins in 1995.
