Quiz the Maid Wins Portland Meadows' Lassie

(from Portland Meadows release)
Two-year-old Quiz The Maid overcame a difficult start coming out of the gate to win Saturday's $10,000 Lassie Stakes at Portland Meadows.

Quiz The Maid broke in the air and gave her eight competitors an early advantage. The Basket Weave filly maintained a last-place position down the backside. She moved up quickly going into the turn for home, finding room and splitting her rivals in the stretch. With a sixteenth to go Quiz The Maid kicked home to pass her 6-furlong test by three parts of a length.

The Lassie Stakes was only the second win for jockey Jaime Martinez. He captured his first at Portland Meadows Friday evening.

Returning $28.80 to win, Quiz The Maid defeated Ms Lady Palace, who was second by a length to third place finisher Best Turn Me Loose.

Odds-on favorite America's Pride, who left her competition eating sand in the Nov. 8 Janet Wineberg Stakes, never fired Saturday. She offered a mild bid near the quarter pole but weakened.

Racing resumes Monday afternoon at Portland Meadows at 2:30 p.m.

Beginning Saturday, Portland Meadows will change its first post time to 1:35 p.m.
