Millionaire Mandy's Gold Retired

John Gorham of Steeplechase Farm announced that grade I-winning millionaire Mandy's Gold has been retired to Robert N. Clay's Three Chimneys Farm near Midway, Ky., and will be bred to Deputy Minister in 2004. Bred in Virginia by Audley Farm, 5-year-old Mandy's Gold (Gilded Time--Manduria, by Aloma's Ruler) raced in the Steeplechase name for John and Jeanne Gorham and was trained by Gorham's brother, Michael.

Mandy's Gold, who won or placed in 21 of 24 starts, scored her big win in the 2002 Ruffian Handicap (gr. I) over You at Belmont Park and achieved millionaire status with her win in the Pimlico Breeders' Cup Distaff Handicap (gr. III) this May. She won five other stakes, including the Honorable Miss Handicap (gr. III) at Saratoga and the Chicago Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. III). Her eight stakes-placings included a runner-up performance in the Beldame Stakes (gr. I) and thirds in the Apple Blossom (gr. I), Ballerina (gr. I), Ogden Phipps (gr. I) Handicaps.

A Virginia champion, Mandy's Gold retired with 11 wins and earnings of $1,081,744. She is a half-sister to German stakes winner Matula.
