A P Valentine to Cedar Creek in Texas

Grade I winner A P Valentine has arrived for stallion duty at Dr. William Day's Cedar Creek Farm near Brenham, Texas, where he will stand for $5,000. The 6-year-old son of A.P. Indy started his stallion career in 2002 at Ashford Stud near Versailles, Ky., then was moved that March to Dr. Phillip McCarthy's Watercress near Lexington after showing fertility problems. A reproductive specialist, McCarthy worked closely with A P Valentine.

A P Valentine, who is the sire of two yearlings, a Kentucky-bred colt and an Irish-bred filly, covered about 15 mares in 2003 and got 10 of them in foal. Seven of the mares remain pregnant.

"He's a beautifully conformed horse," McCarthy said. "He's easy to work with and eager to please. We bred young, healthy mares to him."

Day, a reproductive specialist himself, is working with insurance carrier Lloyd's of London in standing A P Valentine.

A P Valentine, who was produced from the Alydar mare Twenty Eight Carat, was bought by Ashford's parent company, Coolmore Stud, for some $16 million while he was in training.
