Turfway Park saw another record fall Jan. 8 when Cindy's Hobby, a 7-year-old mare, set a new track record for five furlongs on dirt. Under jockey Rafael Bejarano, the pair, carrying 122 pounds, stopped the clock at :56.93. The previous mark had been :56.98, set Feb. 23, 2002, by Salutee, who carried 115 pounds. The record-setting win came in the third race, a $5,000 claiming event for fillies and mares 4-years-old and older. Cindy's Hobby is owned by Ron Grout and Nelson Rennekamp and conditioned by Maria Pinzon.
Sent off at 8-5, Cindy's Hobby set fractions of :22.27 and :45.12 on her way to a 6-1/2 length victory. Bejarano kept her just off the pace inside and had the lead for good at the three-eighths pole.
Cindy's Hobby is by Tejano out of Santa Cruz (by Carson City). She was bred by Double D Farm Corporation in Kentucky.
