Calder Race Course on Jan. 23 announced its stakes schedules for its 2004 Calder and Tropical meets, which run consecutively. The Calder portion kicks off April 26 through October 23, with Tropical picking up the following day and running through Jan. 2, 2005.The fifth annual Summit of Speed, with $1.75 million in sprint stakes, is slated for July 10. The last two winners of the Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I), Orientate and Cajun Beat, ran in the Summit of Speed, which features the Princess Rooney Handicap (gr. II) and Smile Sprint Handicap (gr. III), both worth $500,000, and the Azalea Breeders' Cup Stakes (gr. III) and Carry Back Stakes (gr. III), each carrying a $300,000 prize.The 13th renewal of the Festival of the Sun goes on Oct. 23, offering $1.55 million in stakes. It features the finals of the Florida Stallion Stakes program, the $400,000 In Reality and $400,000 My Dear Girl divisions.
The Tropical meet features four packages of major events: The Florida Million on Nov. 13; Grand Slam I Dec. 4; Grand Slam II Dec. 18; and Grand Slam III Jan. 1, 2005. The Florida Million features eight stakes worth $1.2 million for Florida breds, while the three Grand Slams total seven graded events, including the $200,000 La Prevoyante Handicap (gr. IIT) and $200,000 W.L. McKnight Handicap (gr. IIT) Dec. 18. On New Years Day newly turned 3-year-olds will run in the Tropical Park Oaks and Tropical Park Derby (gr. IIIT).
