Donors may make gifts of the cards and bears by designating a recipient on the Valentine Horses donation form, which will be available on The Exceller Fund's web site (www.excellerfund.org) through Feb. 7. The majority of donations are used for the day-to-day care of Exceller Fund-sponsored horses. Additional donations are put in a special fund that may be used to purchase horses from auctions or for surgeries that they may require.Exceller, one of the top 100 Thoroughbreds of the 20th century, died an untimely and undignified death in Sweden on April 7, 1997. He is best remembered as the only horse to defeat two Triple Crown winners, Seattle Slew and Affirmed, in the 1978 Jockey Club Gold Cup. The Exceller Fund, founded in 1997, is 100% managed and run by volunteers.
The Exceller Fund is sponsoring its first annual Valentine Horses fundraiser, which runs through Feb. 7.The non-profit organization raises money for the purchase and care of retired Thoroughbreds and other horses in need.To participate in The Exceller Fund's Valentine Horses fundraiser, individuals make a minimum donation of $20. In return, the donor receives a limited release Valentine card that displays a photograph of an Exceller Fund horse (Ruthie's Glimmer or Sierra City). Hand-made mini-bears can be added to the card order for an additional amount.
