Read the Footnotes, Funny Cide Top Palm Meadows Work Tab

The stars were out at Palm Meadows training center Tuesday morning following several days of bad weather, which forced the cancellation the Monday's Gulfstream card and most of Sunday's. Heading the 3-year-old workers was Read the Footnotes, who will make his debut in the Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. I).

Read the Footnotes, winner of the Nashua (gr. III) and Remsen Stakes (gr. II), drilled a sharp six furlongs in 1:12 1/5 for trainer Richard Violette. The New York-bred son of Smoke Glacken will face Calder-based Second of June, Silver Wagon, and Sir Oscar in the 1 1/16 Fountain of Youth on Feb. 14.

On the older horse front, 3-year-old champion Funny Cide worked five furlongs in :59 3/5 handily for his anticipated showdown with Medaglia d'Oro in Saturday's Donn Handicap (gr. I).

Nick Zito filled the track with 3-year-old workers, many of whom had been scheduled to work last Saturday, but had to wait for better track conditions. Heading the Zito brigade was Champagne Stakes (gr. I) winner Birdstone, who breezed six furlongs in 1:15 2/5. The Cliff's Edge, winner of the Iroquois (gr. III) and Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (gr. II), breezed five furlongs in 1:02.

Zito said he caught Birdstone in 1:13 2/5, with the colt breaking off at the half-mile pole and working a quarter mile past the wire.

Other Zito workers included Ghost Mountain, third in the Laurel Futurity (gr. III) and Spectacular Bid Stakes (gr. III), who breezed five furlongs in 1:01 4/5 for the Hutcheson Stakes (gr. III); Pies Prospect, who breezed the same distance in 1:03; and Royal Assault, who went in 1:02.

Todd Pletcher breezed Futurity Stakes (gr. I) runner-up Value Plus five furlongs in 1:02.
