Keep Up With Jones in the Rebel

Among the nine colts entered for Saturday's $200,000 Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park is Smarty Jones, who won the mile Southwest Stakes in his last start. However, due to the conditions of Saturday's race and his competition, the colt is the only entrant slated to carry the full weight of 122 pounds. All other runners received allowances of between 3-8 pounds.

John Servis trains Smarty Jones for Roy and Patricia Chapman's Someday Farm, which bred the son of Elusive Quality in Pennsylvania. In four lifetime starts Smarty Jones is undefeated. He also won last year's Pennsylvania Nursery Stakes and the Count Fleet Stakes at Aqueduct in January.

Trainer Robert Holthus will send out two homebred sons of El Prado for Mrs. James Winn. One is Proper Prado, who is out of Mrs. Winn's stakes winner Proper Banner (by Proper Reality). The second is Pro Prado, who finished third in the Southwest Stakes. He finished less than two lengths behind the winner. In January Pro Prado won the Mountain Valley Stakes at Oaklawn.

Kaaren Biggs' graded stakes winner Mr. Jester (by Silver Deputy) is also entered for the Rebel. Last year Mr. Jester won the Kentucky Cup Juvenile Stakes (gr. III), the Boyd's Gaming Delta Jackpot Stakes, and the Pioneer Stakes. In his last start Mr. Jester finished second to Gradepoint in the Feb. 15 Risen Star Stakes (gr. III). Steve Wren trains the colt.

The winner of the Rebel will be eligible for the Oaklawn Centennial Bonus. If the winner of this race then wins the April 10 Arkansas Derby (gr. II) and the May 1 Kentucky Derby (gr. I), they will earn a $5 million bonus from Oaklawn Park.

The full field for the Rebel Stakes, the 10th race at Oaklawn Park on March 20, contested over 8 1/2 furlongs.
