Padua Stables' Class Above made her return to Turfway Park a successful one Saturday, handily winning the $150,000 Boubonette Breeders' Cup for 3-year-old fillies.
Ridden by Jerry Bailey for trainer Bob Baffert, Class Above added blinkers for her return to the site of her last win, a 16-length romp in the Kentucky Juvenile Fillies Stakes in September.
The daughter of Quiet American
opened up a huge lead in the stretch and coasted to a 3 3/4-length win over Susan's Angel. Native Annie was another half-length behind in third.
Transferred to Santa Anita for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I) Oct. 25, she was seventh, beatne by 16 lengths. In her only start since then, she finished seventh of eight in the Las Virgenes (gr. I) at Santa Anita on Feb. 15.
The 1-2 favorite in a field of six, Class Above won the one-mile Bourbonette in 1:37 4/5 on a track listed as "wet fast."
Her third win in five starts, worth $93,000, doubled her career bankroll to $184,400.
Dr. Michael Marenchic bred Class Above in Kentucky. She sold for $170,000 at Fasig-Tipton in July 2002.
She paid $3, $2.60 and $2.20. Susan's Angel returned $7.80 and $4. Native Annie's show was $2.80.
