Pimlico Race Course opens Wednesday for its 10-week spring meet, which is headlined by the $1 million Preakness Stakes (gr. I), the middle jewel of th Triple Crown, on May 15.Post time for 45 of the 48 racing days will be 1:10 p.m. EST."The Pimlico spring stand is our signature meet of the year," said Lou Raffetto, chief operating officer of the Maryland Jockey Club. "We are 50 days away from the Preakness and the excitement is already building."
The Pimlico spring racing season will feature 26 stakes races for purses of $3,825,000. Thirteen of the added-money races, including all nine of the graded stakes for the meet, are slated for Preakness week. The 13-race Preakness day card includes eight stakes. The Pimlico Special (gr. I) tops the May 14 card, a 12-race program with five stakes races, four of which are graded. The Special's $500,000 purse helps make the day the second biggest on the Maryland racing scene.The first turf race of the season is scheduled for April 18.
