Local Influence in Gulfstream's Aventura

The $250,000 Aventura Stakes for 3-year-olds is chock full of Florida-based and Florida-bred horses. All eight entrants made their last start in the Sunshine State, and six of the eight were bred within the state's boundaries.

The locals could all be gunning for Kentucky-bred Forest Grove, who is the the morning line favorite at 2-1. Todd Pletcher trains the son of Forestry for Aaron and Marie Jones, who also bred the colt. Forest Grove broke his maiden at Gulfstream Park in January and won an allowance in February. This is his first start in stakes company.

Zakocity is the second choice at 3-1. He ran fourth in his last outing, the March 14 Tampa Bay Derby (gr. III) and finished third to another Aventura rival, Kaufy Mate, in the Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa in February. His last eight starts have all been at the Aventura distance of 8 1/2-furlongs, and he has won or placed in half of those races. Zakocity (by Precocity) was bred in Florida by John Franks and is owned by Paul Pompa Jr.

Humorously (Distorted Humor ) comes into the Aventura off a smashing 8 1/2-length win in the March 15 OBS Championship Stakes in which he equaled the track record of 1:44.20. Joe Bravo, who finished fourth with Humorously in the colt's first start in December, will again be aboard for trainer William White and owner Oxbow Racing.
