Kids to the Cup Back for Santa Anita Derby

(from Santa Anita notes)
For the fifth consecutive year, Kids to the Cup will enjoy a visit to Santa Anita on Santa Anita Derby day.

KTTC is a national racing fan club for kids from ages eight to 16 conceived by Trudy McCaffery, prominent owner and breeder and a member of the Oak Tree Racing Association's board of directors.

"We also have an alumni group because kids want to stay involved," said executive director John DeSantis. "The best example of the success of this organization is that we have two kids at the University of Arizona in the equine program and two members at the University of Louisville in the equine program.

"All four started in Kids to the Cup five years ago. They were 14 years old then, now they're 19. One of the two girls at the University of Arizona is from Washington, the other from New York, coasts apart, but they're roommates at Arizona and they met on one of our trips through Kids to the Cup. They became friends and now they're in college together.

"We've got a group of 20 people, parents and kids, out here this year. We're going to take the Seabiscuit tour hosted by Chris McCarron. On the tour they'll visit the receiving barn, the jocks' room, the paddock, the whole thing. After that we'll visit (Bob) Baffert's barn, (Richard) Mandella's barn, (John) Sadler's barn and Jenine Sahadi's barn. They'll see the horses and how a barn works from the inside."
