Keeneland and Churchill Downs' publicity departments will keep an eye on the progress of Smarty Jones in the days leading up to the Derby.
Smarty Jones, a Pennsylvania native and Arkansas' adopted son, was scheduled to relocate to Kentucky on Tuesday.Trainer John Servis plans to base his undefeated Kentucky Derby (gr. I) hope at Keeneland, near Lexington, Ky. until the May 1 classic, just 18 days away. The Elusive Quality colt has made three of his four starts this year at Oaklawn Park, starting with the Feb. 28 Southwest Stakes.Servis, Smarty, and owners/breeders Patricia and Roy Chapman have a lot on the line. There is the unblemished race record, the potential of a $5-million bonus which was promised by Oaklawn Park owner Charles Cella to any horse that could win the Rebel Stakes, Arkansas Derby (gr. II), and Kentucky Derby (gr. I), and then, of course, there's the Derby.
