Bare Necessities, winner of the 2003 Sixty Sails Handicap at Hawthorne Race Course, will look to make it two years in a row when she returns to the Illinois track for the grade III, 1 1/8-mile event for fillies and mares April 24.
Owned by Iron Country Farms, Bare Necessities has won eight races, six of them stakes. Three of the stakes were grade III events: the Indiana Breeders' Cup Oaks at Hoosier Park in 2002, and the Gardenia Stakes at Ellis Park and Sixty Sails in 2003.
Trained by Wally Dollase, the 5-year-old mare by Silver Deputy
began her 2004 campaign with a victory Jan. 16 in the Paseana Handicap at Santa Anita Park. She followed up with a second-place finish Feb. 16 in the Santa Maria Handicap (gr. I) at Santa Anita behind Star Parade.
In her last start March 14, Bare Necessities finished third in another grade I stakes at Santa Anita, the Santa Margarita Invitational Handicap. Adoration, winner of the 2003 Breeders' Cup Distaff, and Star Parade finished first and second in that event.
Bred by Iron Country Farms in Kentucky, Bare Necessities has banked $864,911. She has finished first, second, or third in 15 of her 20 starts thus far. She's the 122-pound highweight for the $250,000 Sixty Sails, which lured a field of seven.
Next in line at 114 pounds is Illinois-bred Julie's Prize, who's two-for-two this year with both wins having come at Hawthorne. In her last start April 10. Julie's Prize won the state-bred Peach Of It Handicap for trainer Anthony Mitchell.
Owned by Richard Otto Stables, Julie's Prize, a 4-year-old filly by El Prado
, has won five stakes, all of them for Illinois-breds. Her bankroll stands at $386,977 on a record of seven wins in 18 starts.
