Gold Rush Day In California

More than $1.3 million in purses are up for grabs Saturday and the best California-breds will duel it out over an entire day at Hollywood Park as part of the Citibank Gold Rush V program. A total of 100 horses were entered for the 10-race card, which is headlined by the $250,000 Citibank Snow Chief Stakes, a nine-furlong main track event for sophomores.

Papaino, Taub and Noctis's Cheiron returns off a fourth-place finish in the March 14 San Felipe Stakes (gr. II) and will face a field of seven others in the Snow Chief. The gray son of Maria's Mon was second in the Sunshine Millions NATC Sash Stakes in January and will be making his first attempt at nine furlongs on Saturday for 21-year-old trainer Kristin Mulhall.

Multiple stakes-placed former claimer O.K. Mikie ships in from Northern California for trainer Jerry McArthur while Cal Cup Juvenile hero He's The Rage will be looking for his first trip to the winner's circle this year. The Snow Chief will be the afternoon's ninth race.

Excessivepleasure, last seen finishing third in the March 28 Godolphin Mile (gr. II) in Dubai, will take on a field of eight other 4-year-olds and up in the 7 1/2 furlong Tiznow Stakes. The Doug O'Neill trainee, who won three stakes last year, will carry regular jockey and recent Southern California transplant Jon Court to the gate. Also entered for the $150,000 Tiznow is Beau Soliel, an eight-length winner of his last race who will making his stakes debut for owners Bob Bone and Earle Mack and trainer Jeff Mullins.

Nine fillies and mares, four years old and upward, will race over seven furlongs in the $150,000 B. Thoughtful Stakes, which was carded as the fourth race of the day. The Wesley Ward-trained Bear Fan will likely be the public's post time favorite off her two recent stakes victories--the Barbara Fritchie Handicap (gr. II) at Delaware Park and Irish O'Brien Stakes at Santa Anita. Cal Cup Matron winner Royally Chosen will also be part of the nine-runner field and looking to avenge her most recent back-to-back losses in stakes company.

Course-record holder Lennyfromalibu will lead a field of eight other 4-year-olds and up to post in the eighth race, the $150,000 TVG Khaled Stakes. The Madeleine Aurbach homebred son of Unusual Heat won the Crystal Water Handicap at Santa Anita in his last start and also last year's Cal Cup Mile. The 5-year-old gelding will most likely receive his stiffest challenge from millionaire and graded stakes winner Continental Red, who is trained by Ian Jory.

Trainer Bob Baffert sends out the powerful duo of Yearly Report and Western Hemisphere in the $200,000 Melair Stakes for sophomore fillies. Yearly Report will be making her first start since winning the Santa Ynez Stakes (gr. II) in January while Western Hemisphere, a full sister to multiple grade I-winning millionaire General Challenge, will be making her stakes debut in her third career start.
