Twilight Road Wakes Up in Memorial Day 'Cap

Twilight Road beat Hear No Evil by 5 1/4 lengths and won the $100,000 Memorial Day Handicap (gr. III) at Calder Race Course on Monday.

Ridden by Phil Teator, the 7-year-old Twilight Road raced midpack in the full field of 12, made his move at the quarter pole, and passed the pacesetter, Hear No Evil, in the stretch. He drew away to win the 1 1/16 miles race in 1:45 3/5 over a fast main track.

Gold Dollar, a 59-1 shot, rallied from last in the field of 12 and was another length back in third.

Supah Blitz, the 6-5 favorite, was never a factor, finishing seventh.

Twilight Road, a gelded son of Cahill Road, paid $17.20, $9.20 and $8.60. Hear No Evil paid $15.40 and $9.00, while Gold Dollar was $20 to show.

The Memorial Day Handicap was Twilight Road's second graded stakes victory. He also won the Ack Ack Handicap (gr. III) at Churchill Downs in 2002. Owned by Donamire Farm, he is trained by David Fawkes. In his last start, he won a division of the Thats Our Buck overnight stakes here going seven furlongs on April 26 at Calder.

"Obviously, he loves this track," Fawkes said. "(Treator) has been working with him to get him off the bit and relax a little better because he has been so aggressive. He's older now and has learned to rate."

Twilight Road has won 10 of 42 in his career with earnings of $516,557.
