Baze, who tops the jockey standings at Bay Meadows' spring meeting with 77 victories, hopes to be back in the saddle when racing resumes Wednesday.
Leading jockey Russell Baze, who bruised his lower back Saturday at Bay Meadows in an accident behind the starting gate, tried to ride Sunday but quit after one race. Baze rode Unforgetabull to a second-place finish in Sunday's second race and then took off his remaining five mounts due to soreness. Baze was injured Saturday when he slid off the back of the 2-year-old filly Maiden of Honor, who reared prior to the start of the third race. The Hall of Famer landed on his tailbone and didn't ride Maiden of Honor – who finished second under replacement rider Macario Rodriguez – nor his remaining four mounts Saturday.
